Charity Gig @ The Winter Gardens 6th Jan 07

Charity gig - 6th Jan - Winter Garden Theatre, Eastbourne - for the benefit of Breast Cancer Care and The Willow Foundation. The evening started with singer/sonwriter Mark Marler who began with a bunch of his own songs, then completed hi set with a number of covers, allowing the audience to join in. Adter a quick change on stage, Nelson King, from Bexhill, gave their usual impeccable performance with a relaxed acoustic set in front of a growing audience.
By The time Summer Born Wild took to the stage the crowd had swelled and there was a surge to the front, with much armwaving from a delighted audience. What was striking was the age range of the intent audience - from pre-teen to pensioners - showing what a broad appeal these guys have. What also was proved was the commercial viability of bands performing their own compositions - with material as good as this it can't fail to impress. More venues ought to take note and think further than tribute and covers bands. KEEP MUSIC ORIGINAL AND LIVE! Well done, Summer Born Wild, you're going to put Eastbourne on the music map of the world!

Best move by Venue M? Pre-gig repeated play of a remixed Kenny Loggins Footloose? Loose! Footloose! Kick off your Sunday shoes? and repeat. Three plays and your bleeding ears will beg for bands. And so it was that I lapped up the energetic opener from Tunbridge Wells four-piece Intraverse. ?Rock is dead!? hollered frontman Max Pepe ? sadly, no one had told the ageing gent in the leather pants and he stormed out shortly after. Sad ? he missed The Jakals: Brighton?s bluesy, gin-soaked quartet who walked the line between Clapton and the Black Crowes, and who tonight threw in some Jagger stylings to keep things alive up front. (?Close your eyes and imagine they?re Z Z Top!? shouted a mate to me mid-set. Hmmm? beardy.)

Headlining were Summer Born Wild, Eastbourne?s very own contenders for the BBC?s Electric Proms, and tonight warming up for their big London gigs at New Cross Inn, Lewisham Road on the 23rd Oct, and Storm in Leicester Square on 27th Oct. Already likened to the Manics and the Goo Goo Dolls, bigger crowds certainly await the trio ? though SBW opened cautiously, with charismatic front-man Owen Donovan lost in the mix for opening tracks Little Chelsea and Another Day, and the sound falling back on riffs and drums. But Donovan?s vocals, touched and edgy, found form again with MySpace hit Alison, and by Full Circle they were at full tilt ? shades of U2 and echoes of Bloc Party line the air with a softer pitch, before a riding guitar/drum putsch sears the room ready for the driven chorus and Donovan?s Cobain-style ?My heart, my heart??outro. Song of the night, without doubt. Energy undimmed, the haunting bridge of fans? favourite Amazing At Last, and the feeback/synth intro of final song Waterbased, landed beautifully and Venue M cheered on for Eastbourne?s latest fledglings. Not that they?ll forget us when the big time comes ? it might be ?covered in stones and condoms?, but they?d still take the beach over the city. And for drummer Craig, there?s nothing better than a round of Treasure Island?s crazy golf.

Boys, you?re taking Eastbourne to the masses.

The Storm

STORM, Leicester Sq - BBC Electric Proms Week

On Friday 27th Oct Summer Born Wild hit the lights of London when they played at Storm in the heart of Leicester Square. Following Stevenage band Manaboutadog, Summer Born Wild took to the stage in front of a packed audience ? many of whom had made the arduous trip by coach from Eastbourne ? and they weren?t disappointed.
The opening feedback of Little Chelsea drew more people away from the bar to watch. This was followed by Alison, then what must surely be their first release, Amazing ? at Last.
After the popular Shape Changers, the boys aired a new song for the first time in public - Mirrors in the Air brought the vocals of Glenn and Craig more to the front, blending with Owen?s distinctive throaty voice, a good indication that Summer Born Wild have so much to offer in the future.
The musically rich Full Circle was followed by their final song, Waterbased during which many of the audience were joining in with the catchy chorus ? ?got a feeling? and ?the best you?ve had?. Certainly the audience felt this way and showed their appreciation in their rapturous applause. If not for the fact that Francis Rodino was due on stage ? everyone would have been more than happy for the set to continue.
All in all, we witnessed living proof that Eastbourne is ready to kick out against the ?blue-rinse? and ?God?s waiting room? jibes so often thrown about. Rock on Summer Born Wild!

Note: you can catch Summer Born Wild next Friday 3rd November a bit nearer to home at The Priory Court Hotel, Pevensey, with Nelson King in a warm-up gig in preparation for their tour next year.
